Dominant: the Great New England Patriots Dynasty of 2001 to 2018
Ever since it was born, American football has witnessed many dynasties dominate the NFL as both time and the sport progress. These dynasties have kept fans, sports commentators, panelists, and experts all talking for generations. Each new season, everyone is asking questions like “Is this the season someone will topple the Chiefs?” and “Who, if anyone at all?” Below is a discussion of the greatest dynasty that the NFL has ever experienced: the New England Patriots.
The Pats: Way out in front
The NFL has seen some truly memorable dynasties, such as the Dallas Cowboys (“America’s Team”) of the 1990s and, in more recent times, the Kansas City Chiefs (2018 to 2024). But despite all the debate, no team comes remotely close to the 2001 to 2018 New England Patriots dynasty under the leadership of Bill Belichick, who steered the ship for nearly 25 years.
In a league where the rules were there to ensure parity and short-term success between teams, Belichick took “the Pats” to the Super Bowl nine times. Six of those times, the team left with the Lombardi Trophy, and in 19 seasons, the team lifted division titles 17 times. The Patriots also claimed nine AFC titles and, in 2007, completed the only 16-0 season in NFL history. Anyone checking football odds in those days would have likely found them predicting the Pats under Belichick as runaway favorites.
Disciplined and strategic
Focus is one of the main reasons why the Pats delivered season after season. The coach wouldn’t tolerate nonsense, tantrums, or tardiness. He also made sure they were careful about what they said to the media. He wanted 100% focus on the game, and roster after roster gave it to him. This discipline set the team apart from the others.
As well as discipline, the Pats had a solid drafting system. They took full advantage of free agency. Rather than drafting players based on how they compared to others in the NCAA, the Patriots would compare them to their own players and other NFL pros. Could they replace a player on the pro squad? If so, they were in.
Drafted players also had to have three specific qualities: leadership, devotion, and maturity. They needed to ooze these, in fact, to fit in with the locker room style.
Tom Brady: a team lynchpin for 20 seasons
When Belichick drafted Tom Brady in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft, no one knew he’d just brought in a quarterback who would become the most accomplished player in NFL history and the best quarterback of his generation. Best of all for the Patriots, Brady was extremely loyal and would serve them until 2019, that season included, before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.
The 6’4” quarterback played 285 regular-season games for the Patriots. While with the team, he won the league MVP award three times (2007, 2010, and 2017). Between the Patriots and the Bucks, he completed 7,753 passes for 89,124 yards and 649 touchdowns.
Rob Gronkowski
Brady wasn’t the only major influence on the Pats’ fortunes. Rob Gronkowski, one of the greatest tight ends of all time, joined the team from in the University of Arizona as the 42nd draft pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and served from 2010 to 2018 before retiring briefly in 2019. In 2020, he reunited with former teammate Brady at the Buccaneers.
Gronkowski was big, strong, and fast, not to mention super tough. He thrived during playoff games. He won three Super Bowls with the Pats and, in his career, chalked up 9,286 receiving yards and hit 92 touchdowns.
Matt Light
Some consider Matt Light, who protected Brady’s blind side for a decade, one of the greatest offensive tackles of all time. Light was another loyal servant of the Patriots and spent his 11 years in the NFL with the New England club. The reliable Light joined the Pats in the second round of the 2001 NFL draft and played a major role in them enjoying 11 consecutive winning seasons. During that time, the team won three Super Bowls, five conference titles, and nine division championships.
The Patriots Hall of Famer is remembered as much for his fiery temperament as for his prowess as a pro tackle. Light was involved in a famous on-field physical altercation with Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder. Media personnel have also recalled him delivering stern words to star quarterback Tom Brady, of all people.
As a dynasty, the New England Patriots of 2001-2018 tower above the rest. The coach-quarterback combo of Belichick, who instilled discipline and exercised strategic drafting brilliance, and the technically superb Brady was a powerful driver in the team’s success. Of course, one man alone didn’t make the team, and Brady had other outstanding players around him, such as Matt Light and Rob Gronkowski, who helped the team to Super Bowl glory, too.
